Frequently asked questions
Answers to your common questions new members have
What does it cost?
There is no fixed price for The Way. However, each Wayfarer is asked to make a monthly contribution. For example, some might make a commitment of $50 per month, others $75 per month. Each person will make a commitment during the application process that is both affordable and responsible. We will be discussing the contribution amount personally with each Wayfarer, we want everyone to be able to participate and not let money be the issue preventing them from doing it. We can help each other out. The generosity of some can make The Way possible for others.
Can I get a feel of The Way before committing?
Yes, the month of October will be a tryout period for everyone. Everyone is welcome to participate in the talks, study circles and retreat (Oct 11-13th). The application window will end November 1st.
I am very interested in The Way, but I’m just not sure…
You are not the only one. In fact, many people have expressed the same hesitation. So we have decided to make the October teaching sessions and weekend retreat open to everyone. Registration will close on November 1st (the solemnity of All Saints). Such a significant commitment requires prayerful discernment. As well as speaking with your friends, you’ll want to bring this to prayer and your spiritual guide. The Way will definitely be like jumping out of the boat. May we all experience what it is to walk on the water towards our Lord who calls out, “It is I. Do not be afraid.”
How long is The Way?
The Way is not for the faint hearted! The program lasts 2 years. Daunting, we know, but we spend years preparing ourselves professionally, so why not invest this time in yourself and get ready for the rest of your life? The Way is designed to provide a stable and continuous pathway for spiritual formation and growth, focusing on deepening your relationship with Christ and understanding your purpose and vocation, something that already takes years to understand and apply to anyone’s life.
What is The Way?
More than just another faith-formation program, The Way is a pilgrimage which will help you answer the fundamental questions of identity and mission: Who am I? and Who am I for? The Way is a journey to becoming the person God created you to be.
What can I expect?
The three pillars of The Way are: teaching, study circles and individual accompaniment. Every two weeks you’ll participate in an interactive workshop on a topic outlined in the formation itinerary, alternating between in-person classes over dinner and online meetings. In between these workshops you’ll reflect on the teaching with your study circle. You’ll also have the chance to meet regularly with a mentor.
Where does the money go?
This money goes to cover the expenses of the four weekend retreats, the monthly dinner, facility rental, insurance, and other items such as promotion, website, and printed materials. The real cost per participant is higher than $75/ month and we are grateful to the benefactors who are making The Way affordable. Don’t hesitate to reach out so we can look at options together. We don’t want financial concerns to be an obstacle to your participation.
Could you tell me more about the content?
The first year will answer the question of identity “Who am I?” by exploring the Christian Worldview, Catholic Anthropology, Theology of the Body (TOB), our Baptismal identity, the stages of the spiritual life, prayer, relationships, healing, and more. The second year will equip you for your mission and will cover topics such as: discernment, vocation, the sacraments of marriage and holy orders, the call to apostolate, and spiritual gifts.
Please explain who the mentors are and their role.
The mentors are Legionary priests and trained lay spiritual guides. Every two weeks they will touch base with you by phone for 15 minutes to see how you are doing on the program. Their role is to not to give you a mini-spiritual direction, but rather to answer any questions you have about the teaching or help resolve and facilitate any challenges you are having with your study circle small group. Spiritual direction can be arranged outside of The Way.
Who can participate?
Young adults after college, in their 20s and 30s are welcome to apply. Only 50 places are available.
What is the origin of The Way?
Every start-up starts in a garage, and that’s what we have been doing since the Fall of 2023. We are a team of Legionary priests, married couples and young adults. As we listened to young adults regarding the challenges of living the faith in the Bay Area, we felt moved to create a formation pilgrimage. A name emerged; we called it “The Way.” This journey will help young adults be witnesses of God’s love in the world.
I am apprehensive about the study circles. What if I get stuck with others that I simply don’t mesh with?
The goal of The Way is not to find your best friends, but to be transformed by Christ from the inside out. And we definitely don’t want anyone to feel stuck. So, to avoid this and to foster the formation of homogenous small groups, we are leaving ample time for everyone to find a small group that suits them. The October weekend retreat will be a time to get to know the other wayfarers and find your spot. And, of course, the core team will be there to help the study circles get set up and make any changes if necessary. The group leaders will be making sure no one feels judged or pressured to share. They will also keep the conversation focused on discussion points given after the last teaching session.
I am worried that if I miss a teaching session, I’ll fall too far behind…
This is a good chance to explain that the teaching in The Way will be very different from your college experience. Rather than mathematical formulae, the content here is existential. While it will build on itself, the core principles will be repeated frequently, so even if you do miss the odd week you won’t be lost. And you’ll always be able to listen to the recording. Plus your fellow Wayfarers will be happy to bring you up to speed.
What if I have to relocate because of my job?
While meeting in-person is ideal, we recognize that this is not always possible. In the case you do need to move out of town, we will be making the teaching component available online, both in live-streaming and in a virtual library. The small groups can also meet virtually, so in case of relocation you can continue on The Way. We only ask that you return to participate in person for the weekend retreats.
What is the time commitment?
From October through June you’ll be meeting one workday evening a week, alternating between biweekly teachings and study circle sessions during the offweek. Teachings will generally take place in the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, alternating between online and in person teachings. Study Circles can decide when and where to meet. There will also be 2 retreats per year: October 11-13, 2024 at Camp St. Francis and February 21-23, 2025 at St. Clare’s in Soquel.
